Welcome to ItrackLS Constructivism
These case studies focus on how schools are trying to move away from behaviourism and passive
learning towards a more constructivist approach
with active learning.
Introduction
The main reason for introducing Learning and Teaching Case Studies was to highlight the
different examples of constructivist practice that exist within Scottish schools.
It was difficult to choose a starting place but it seemed sensible to start with a methodology
that was operational. In other words examine an example of classroom practice that was being
carried out and was not just a theoretical consideration. However, it is hoped that this will
only be the beginning and that anyone who has interesting classroom practice to share will have
the opportunity to do so.
The first Case Study looks at the use of the Jigsaw method. This method has emerged from a
rather humble beginning of trying to create dynamic worksheets. Dynamic worksheets contain
details of the activity or task to be completed and any additional information required. This can be obtained by clicking on a hyperlink on the worksheet.
All resources required such as Word documents, Powerpoint presentations, Internet websites, etc. need to be linked to the worksheet.
All Case Studies will follow a similar approach and indicate some of the planning, organisation, training and decision making that has taken place to reach their present position.
Use the navigation bars within each Case Study to move from one section to another.
The case studies are organised as follows:
